Pass it On - Volunteering with my kids!
Updated: Sep 21
Some of my most meaningful volunteer experiences have been the simplest. When my children were younger, we volunteered together making peanut butter sandwiches for people experiencing homelessness in Denver.
The task itself was uncomplicated, but that was part of what made it meaningful. I wanted my children to understand that helping others does not always require a grand gesture. Sometimes it means giving a few hours of your time, making a sandwich, or simply recognizing that someone in your community may need a helping hand.
As a parent, I felt it was important for my children to learn that we have a responsibility to look beyond ourselves. I wanted giving back to feel less like an occasional obligation and more like a natural part of being a member of a community.
Looking back, I value those hours together not only because we were helping others, but because we were sharing an experience that reflected something I hoped to pass along to my children: compassion becomes more meaningful when we put it into practice.
