Finding the meaning of Determination in Guatemala
Updated: Sep 21
I spent two weeks volunteering at an orphanage in Guatemala, an experience that left an indelible mark on me. My days were filled with simple but meaningful tasks: helping children with art projects, sharing traditions and explaining American holidays, preparing meals, cleaning, and pitching in wherever help was needed.
One child I met has stayed with me ever since. Unable to walk, he made his way to school each day by crawling. I was struck not only by the challenges he faced, but by his determination to attend school despite them.
The experience gave me a different perspective on service. I learned that volunteering is often less about arriving with something extraordinary to offer and more about being present, contributing where you are needed, and allowing the people you meet to change your understanding of the world. Years later, I still think about those two weeks and the people I met there.
